Indian lockdown likely to slow down Indonesian coal export

27 March 2020 12:41

JAKARTA. The nationwide lockdown imposed by the Indian government due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic will likely cause a slowdown in Indonesia's coal export to India, said Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI) Executive Director Hendra Sinadia.

According to Mr Sinadia, the lockdown will cause global coal demand, particularly from Indonesia, to weaken due to Indian businesses reducing their operational hours.

"Moreover, several [Indian] ports have declared force majeure related to the lockdown, which will last until April 14," Mr Sinadia told Kontan, Thursday (26/3).

However, APBI has not calculated the potential decline of Indonesia's coal export to India. In 2017, Indonesia exported 90.51 million tonnes of coal to India. (KR/MS)
