JAKARTA - Sarinah department store has suffered losses of up to Rp 500 million per day due to riots in front of the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) building in Thamrin St after the announcement of the 2019 election results.

PT Sarinah CEO Gusti Ngurah Putu Sugiarta Yasa said the management decided to temporarily close the department store due to security concerns since Tuesday (21/5). The closing, he added, will possibly last until this weekend.

“By suspending operations, we could possibly loss Rp 400 to 500 million per day in revenue,” Mr Yasa told Tirto.id, Wednesday (22/5).

Sarinah, which is Jakarta’s oldest department store, has been significantly damaged by the Thamrin St riots. The Sarinah signpost in front of the building was broken, and glass windows of a McDonald’s restaurant in the department store were shattered.

Previously, Jakarta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) estimated that losses from disruption of economic activities due to post-election riots could reach Rp 1.5 trillion. Jakarta Kadin Deputy Chair Sarman Simanjorang said at least 80,000 kiosks suffered declining turnovers due to the riots. (MS)
