Growth in manufacturing industry is predicted to skyrocket in the second quarter

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry is optimistic that the manufacturing industry sector can grow more aggressively in the second quarter of 2019 compared to the previous period, due to the momentum of Ramadan and Eid.

"We believe it is higher than industry growth in the first quarter which reached 4.8%. We hope to get closer to 5%," said Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry Haris Munandar in Jakarta on Sunday (26/5).

According to Haris, the business climate after the presidential and legislative elections improved after investors chose to wait and see. In fact, before Eid, most people spend their money on basic needs such as food and clothing.

The manufacturing industry is one sector that contributes significantly to the total investment in Indonesia. In the first quarter of 2019, the non-oil and gas processing industry contributed 18.5% or Rp 16.1 trillion to the realization of domestic investment (PMDN).

The three sectors that support the largest total domestic investment in the three months earlier this year are the food industry, that contributed Rp 7.1 trillion, followed by the base metal industry (Rp 2.6 trillion) and the tobacco processing industry (Rp 1.2 trillion).

The Ministry of Industry targets, throughout 2019, the growth of the manufacturing industry can reach 5.4%. The sub-sector which is expected to grow high including the food and beverage industry, the machinery industry, the textile and apparel industry, the leather industry, leather goods, footwear, metal, and computer and electronic goods industries.
