Indonesia AirAsia to launch BigPay payment app

24 June 2019 19:20

JAKARTA - PT AirAsia Indonesia Tbk (CMPP) plans to launch a mobile payment app called BigPay as part of the company's digital transformation.

According to the company's public expose sheet, BigPay is a payment app that offers, among others, e-wallet and remittance services. Indonesia AirAsia passengers can use their BigPay balance to purchase tickets of all airlines under the AirAsia Group as well as for transactions in merchants such as hotels and restaurants.

"BigPay will not only offer attractive fares if customers purchase tickets and pay through the app, but also remittance service," said Indonesia AirAsia CEO Dendy Kurniawan in a public expose at the GranDhika Iskandarsyah Hotel, South Jakarta on Monday (24/6).

In addition, said Mr Kurniawan, BigPay offers several benefits such as lower exchange rates thanks to the company's reserve foreign exchanges. He also guarantees that exchange rates in BigPay transactions will be lower compared to exchange rates in banks or money changers.

The payment app is expected to be launched this year after a permit from the Financial Services Authority (OJK) is obtained. So far, BigPay is only available for users in Malaysia.

"In launching BigPay we need to consider the permit from the OJK. We haven't started [the permit application], because we're still figuring out how to launch the app in Indonesia," said Mr Kurniawan.

Mr Kurniawan added that BigPay's operation will be run by a separate business entity, which will still be a member of the AirAsia Group. Indonesia AirAsia, he continued, will remain focused on commercial aviation. (MS)
