Giant outlets are closed down due to tight competition and changing consumer spending patterns

JAKARTA. Director of PT Hero Supermarket Tbk (HERO) Hadrianus Wahyu Trikusumo revealed that the closure of 6 of its Giant outlets was caused by increasingly tight competition in the food retail market in Indonesia and changing consumer spending patterns.

"Giant is a strong brand, but we must continue to adapt to compete effectively by implementing a multi-year transformation program to provide long-term improvement," said Hadrian as quoted by kumparan on Wednesday (26/6).

The long-term improvement inevitably had to involve rearranging business space. The company must change and refresh the performance of its outlets to improve its quality and productivity so that it can provide better service to customers.

Hadrianus did not deny that the decision was a difficult choice for the company. "This is not an easy thing, but it needs to be done to respond to rapidly changing consumer behavior," he said.

Hadrianus further said that HERO would still be committed to the multi-year transformation plan. In addition to strengthening the food business, HERO will also develop its other businesses, Guardian Health & Beauty and IKEA which are considered to show good growth potential for the future. (AM/AR)
