JAKARTA. The government, in this case the Ministry of Finance, has given capital injections for BPJS Kesehatan (Indonesian national healthcare security) every year during the period of 2015-2018, to cover its deficit.

However, the capital injections are not enough to cover the deficit. In fact, Director of BPJS Kesehatan, Kemal Imam Santoso said that the deficit could reach Rp 28.5 trillion in 2019.

"Our estimation if the current condition remain unchanged is Rp. 28.5 trillion. This is from last year's deficit of Rp. 9.1 trillion plus this year's of Rp. 19 trillion," said Kemal at the Parliament Building, Jakarta on Wednesday (21/8/2019) ).

He said one of the ways to improve BPJS Kesehatan's balance sheet was to increase premium fees, improve the health service system, and improve risk monitoring. "Earlier, Finance Minister mentioned the causes of the deficit, one of which was contribution. There were other things that we had to improve, efficiency, control, risk management, etc.," he explained.

Data shows that in 2014, BPJS Kesehatan's deficit was recorded at Rp 1.9 trillion, then increased significantly to Rp 9.4 trillion in 2015. In 2016, it decreased to Rp 6.4 trillion. In 2017, it increased again significantly to Rp 13.8 trillion. Finally, in 2018, it increased again to Rp 19.4 trillion.

Since 2015, the Ministry of Finance has routinely injected capital to cover the deficit; Rp 5 trillion in 2015, Rp 6.8 trillion in 2016, Rp 3.6 trillion in 2017, and Rp 10.3 trillion in 2018. (AM/AR)
