Attack on Saudi Aramco refineries disrupts 5% of global oil production

16 September 2019 08:42

JAKARTA. The Yemeni Houthi rebels' attack on two oil refineries owned by Saudi Aramco on Saturday (14/9) can potentially disrupt 5% of global oil production, or around 5.7 million barrels per day.

As reported by Reuters, the attack is considered to have the most significant impact on Saudi Arabia's oil production. The country is one of the world's largest oil exporters, with average exports of 7 million barrels per day.

However, the United States has accused Iran of masterminding the attack despite the Yemeni Houthi rebels' claim of responsibility. "There is no proof that Yemen was behind the attack," said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The US government has also stated that it will assist the Saudi government to investigate the attack and release its oil reserves if necessary, although Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said that the Saudi government is capable of handling the incident on its own. (KR/MS)
