JAKARTA - Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi has been named as a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in a grant proposal bribery case involving the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI).

As reported by CNN Indonesia, the National Awakening Party (PKB) politician allegedly received Rp 26.5 billion in bribes as a commitment fee for a grant proposal submitted by KONI to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“The suspect allegedly received Rp 26.5 billion as a commitment fee for a grant proposal submitted by KONI to the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as bribes from the Chair of the Satlak Prima (Golden Indonesia Programme Task Force) Steering Committee and other bribes related to the suspect’s status as Youth and Sports Minister,” said KPK Deputy Chairman Alexander Marwata at a press conference at the KPK headquarters, South Jakarta on Wednesday (18/9).

The bribes, added Mr Marwata, were received by Mr Nahrawi in stages from 2014 to 2018 through his personal secretary, Miftahul Ulum, who has also been named as a suspect. In addition, Mr Nahrawi also allegedly asked for Rp 11.8 billion from 2016 to 2018.

“The money allegedly would be used for the Minister’s personal interests as well as those of other related parties,” said Mr Marwata. (MS)
