Ministry of ESDM stops issuing nickel ore export recommendation temporarily

JAKARTA. As of 29 October 2019, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) stopped issuing recommendations for nickel ore export, while conducting a cargo and smelter inspection.

Arifin Tasrif, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, said that his party has begun inspection on a number of export cargoes, export volumes, and the development of smelters in the country. "While inspection is being done, we will not issue new recommendations," Arifin was quoted as saying by Kontan.

Nevertheless, Tasrif was reluctant to explain how the fate of those who had received a nickel ore export permit. Even though Bahlil Lahadalia, Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has requested that the ban on nickel ore exports be implemented soon.

Agung Pribadi, Head of the Communications Bureau of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the ministry is evaluating nickel ore exporters who have obtained permits. "We are conducting a field visit to inspect the development of smelters," said Pribadi. (KR/AR)
