03 December 2019 15:18

JAKARTA. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) found a total of 125 illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) lenders throughout November 2019.

Investment Alert Task Force Chairman Tongam L. Tobing said that the illegal lenders operated on digital platforms and offered loans through text messages. "We ask that the public be cautious before applying for loans online by checking if the P2P lender is already authorised by OJK or not," said Mr Tobing as quoted by Kontan, Tuesday (3/12).

In October the task force found 133 illegal P2P lenders. Throughout January to November, there were a total of 1,494 illegal P2P lenders handled by the task force.

According to Mr Tobing, the task force is partnering 13 parties, including related ministries and institutions, to handle illegal P2P lenders in Indonesia. "All task force members should be more active in preventing the rise of illegal P2P lenders and investment providers to protect public interest," he said. (KR/MS)
