Garuda to be fined for smuggling scandal

06 December 2019 14:59

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation will impose a fine on PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (GIAA) in relation to the smuggling of luxurious goods on board a newly arrived Airbus A330-900 aircraft operated by the flag carrier.

“We have issued a letter containing a fine on Garuda for transporting goods not recorded on official data,” said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi as quoted by CNN Indonesia, Friday (6/12).

The smuggling, said Mr Sumadi, directly violated a regulation that mandates the recording of goods transported by air. Upon inspecting the A330-900 flown in by Garuda from Toulouse on November 17, 2019, Indonesian Customs found 18 boxes containing a disassembled Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Shovelhead motorcycle and two disassembled Brompton folding bicycles.

Furthermore, Mr Sumadi said that the amount of the fine imposed on Garuda will be announced by Director-General of Air Transport Polana B. Pramesti in due time.

“The Director-General will provide further explanation,” said Mr Sumadi. (MS)
