Conservative Party wins majority in UK election

LONDON - The Conservative Party has won a majority in the UK general election, ensuring that Boris Johnson will remain as the country’s Prime Minister.

As of Friday (13/12) the Conservatives have won 364 out of 650 parliamentary seats, the party’s biggest parliamentary majority since Margaret Thatcher won the 1987 election.

“I will make it my mission to work night and day, flat out to prove that you were right in voting for me this time, and to earn your support in the future,” said Mr Johnson in his victory speech, Thursday (12/12).

“And I say to you that in this election your voice has been heard, and about time too. The people want change… We cannot and we must not let them down.”

In addition, Mr Johnson also affirmed that his government “will get Brexit done” by January 31, 2020 without any “ifs, buts, and maybe”.

In response to the Labour Party’s loss, having won only 203 seats so far, Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn has said that he will not lead the party in the next election. According to Mr Corbyn, the debate surrounding Brexit has played a role in the election results, deemed as Labour’s worst since 1935.

“Brexit has so polarised and divided debate in this country, it has overridden so much of a normal political debate. I recognise that has contributed to the results that the Labour Party has received this evening all across this country,” said Mr Corbyn as quoted by the BBC. (MS)
