Trump impeachment has no effect on Indonesian economy, says Sri Mulyani

JAKARTA - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that US President Donald Trump’s impeachment will not significantly affect the Indonesian economy.

“There will probably be not any significant effect, because the process has been going on for quite awhile. We’ll see,” Ms Indrawati told Bisnis Indonesia at the Temu Kebangsaan: Merawat Semangat Hidup Berbangsa event at the Aryaduta Hotel, Central Jakarta on Thursday (19/12).

In addition, Ms Indrawati also said that the impeachment proceedings are part of the US political process that Indonesia has to respect.

“We have to respect the US political process,” she added.

As previously reported by IDNFinancials.com, Mr Trump was officially impeached by the US House of Representatives on Wednesday (18/12) on two articles: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The impeachment proceedings were triggered by allegations that Mr Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former US vice-president Joe Biden, who is currently running in the Democratic Party presidential primary, and his son Hunter.

Mr Trump is the third president in US history to be impeached, after Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998. However, it is expected that Mr Trump will be acquitted by the US Senate, which is currently dominated by the Republican Party. (MS)
