Faisal Basri slams Omnibus Law drafting process

19 December 2019 14:18

JAKARTA - University of Indonesia senior economist Faisal Basri has criticised the drafting process of the Omnibus Law, which he deems to be closed and hasty without an academic review. In addition, he also argues that the process only represents the interest of business players without labour representation.

“It’s very dangerous because the process does not represent the interest of workers. There is also no regional interest,” said Mr Basri at the Millenium Hotel, Central Jakarta as quoted by Bisnis.com, Wednesday (18/12).

Mr Basri has also reminded President Joko Widodo to not be overconfident with the policy despite having secured the backing of 74% of the House of Representatives, including the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party faction.

“When a government is too confident, it means danger is imminent,” said Mr Basri, adding that the Omnibus Law should also consider environmental impact and not only focus on facilitating businesses. (MS)
