BEIJING - PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia through a consortium between PT Pembangunan Perumahan (Persero) Tbk (PTPP) and China Aluminum International Engineering Corp Ltd has signed a US$ 695 million engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to build a smelter-grade alumina refinery in Mempawah, West Kalimantan.

“We would like to convey our great appreciation to all parties who have supported the realisation of the EPC contract to build a long-awaited alumina refinery in order to actualise an independent aluminium processing industry in Indonesia,” said Counsellor to the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing Victor S. Hardjono on behalf of Indonesian Ambassador to China Djauhari Oratmangun, Wednesday (15/1).

Through the refinery, said Mr Hardjono, Indonesia is expected to independently produce alumina with a production capacity of up to 1 million tonnes per year.

According to the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, BAI is a subsidiary of PT Inalum (Persero) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) Tbk (ANTM) or Antam. Antam regularly supplies bauxite ore to BAI. (MS)
