ROME - Indonesia and Italy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to increase cooperation in the agriculture sector. The MoU was signed by Indonesian Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo and Italian Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova in Rome.

“The signing of this MoU will encourage agricultural promotion and cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of cultivation and agricultural mechanisation; water management; and agricultural education, training, and research,” said Mr Yasin Limpo in an official statement on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website, Tuesday (21/1).

In a meeting with Ms Bellanova, Mr Yasin Limpo discussed a number of key bilateral issues related to the increase of trade value and investment in agriculture, as well as promoting Indonesian agricultural commodities such as palm, rubber, tropical fruits, tea, and spices. He also invited Italy to invest in the Indonesian agricultural and farming sector.

“As I have told Ms Bellanova, Indonesian products have met the European Union standards in terms of hygiene, health, and SPS phytosanitary and thus they can be exported to European markets, including Italy,” said Mr Yasin Limpo.

“The Indonesian agricultural sector has implemented good agricultural practises and is managed sustainably.” (MS)
