Government signs transportation agreement with Australia

CANBERRA - The governments of Indonesia and Australia have signed an agreement on air connectivity, transportation vocational education, and transportation safety.

The deal was signed by Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi and Australian Home Minister Peter Dutton on Monday (10/2), with President Joko Widodo and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in attendance.

The deal, said Mr Sumadi, is particularly related to air connectivity. Currently there are 115 flights from Australia to Indonesia, while there are only 82 the other way around.

“It should be no problem, and we will ask [the Australian government] to reduce some restrictions. Indonesia’s [travel] status is currently yellow, which is different to some other countries,” said Mr Sumadi in an official statement on the Cabinet Secretariat’s website. Thus, the Indonesian government has asked that Indonesia’s travel status be raised to green to ease movements to and from Australia.

In addition, the deal also discusses transportation vocational education and transportation safety. According to Mr Sumadi, Australia has always supported transportation safety improvement in Indonesia and provided training professionals for transportation vocational education.

“This partnership has been going on since 2003, and we would like to strengthen it with more activities,” Mr Sumadi concluded. (MS)
