Thai cement maker SCG urges implementation of circular economy in Indonesia

JAKARTA - Thai cement producer Siam Cement Group (SCG) Public Co Ltd is urging the implementation of the circular economy concept to support sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Indonesia.

This was conveyed at the SCG Sustainable Development Symposium Indonesia 2020, held at The Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta on Thursday (20/2). "We want to encourage collaboration from all stakeholders needed in applying the concept of circular economy," said SCG CEO Roongrote Rangsiyopash in an official statement received by IDNFinancials.com.

"As the country with the largest population in ASEAN and one of the strongest countries in terms of economy, Indonesia's position is very strategic to be a country that encourages circular Economic Practice, not only at the regional level, but also the world."

In implementing the concept, SCG asserts that the government needs to collaborate with the private sector and the public in utilising resources optimally. SCG defines circular economy as a concept that lowers the amount of waste using the make-use-return principle, which encourages the recycling of production materials so that they can be used to make other products.

"We have been practicing the concept of circular economy in each of our business units, including in Indonesia. Today (20/2) you can experience our projects and innovation on how we applying circular economy principles," Mr Rangsiyopash concluded.

The symposium was also attended by Director-General of Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Textile Industries at the Ministry of Industry Muhammad Khayim on behalf of Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita; Deputy for Human Resources, Science and Technology, and Maritime Culture at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment Safri Burhanuddin on behalf of Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut B. Pandjaitan; and ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General for Sociocultural Community Kung Phoak. (MS)
