JAKARTA. The plan to change the fuel of 52 power plants owned by PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) or PLN from fuel oil (BBM) to Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) will be worked on over the next two years.

Nicke Widyawati, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), said the gasification would require a gas supply of around 162 Billion British Thermal Units per Day (BBTUD). She said that gasification would be carried out in four stages.

Widyawati explained that gasification would help domestic gas uptake, which is currently at 60%. "So this [gasification], is a win-win. For us, there is a certainty of uptake and PLN can also reduce cost," Widyawati said as reported by Kontan.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli Zaini, President Director of PLN, said the gasification of BBM to LNG would help the company save up to Rp 4 trillion per year. Previously, PLN has to spend Rp 16 trillion per year on operating expenses of its fuel-based power plants. (KR/AR)
