Government to build national data centre

02 March 2020 15:11

JAKARTA - The government plans to develop an integrated national data centre, which is expected to commence operation by 2023.

“We hope to start building the data centre in 2020 so that it will be ready by 2023,” Communication Minister Johnny G. Plate told the press after a limited meeting at the Presidential Office, Friday (28/2).

In the project, said Mr Plate, existing regulations need to pertain investment in the data centre by referring to the Electronic Information and Transaction Law, Government Decree No. 71/2019, and 23 articles in various relevant Minister’s Regulations.

According to Mr Plate, relevant Minister’s Regulations also need to address all aspects including protection for data owners, data security, data sovereignty, and investment facilitation. “Technically, requests for data access will be made to either cloud computing providers or cloud computing users,” he said.

Eventually, the government will make a joint decision with the House of Representatives to regulate two types of data in relation to the Private Data Protection Law. The two types of data are general and specific data.

“General data can be transferred in a limited manner, but [the transfer of] specific data is subject to approval from the data owner. It will be regulated by law,” concluded Mr Plate. (MS)
