02 April 2020 14:42

RIYADH - The government of Saudi Arabia has asked Muslims planning to do hajj this year to delay bookings due to uncertainty caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

According to Saudi Hajj Minister Mohammad Banten, the government is concerned about the safety of pilgrims and has asked hajj aspirants to delay contracts with tour operators.

“Saudi Arabia is fully ready to serve pilgrims and umra seekers in all circumstances. But under the current circumstances, as we are talking about the global pandemic, from which we have asked God to save us, the kingdom is keen to protect the health of Muslims and citizens,” said Mr Banten in a speech as quoted by the BBC, Wednesday (1/4).

“We have asked our brother Muslims in all countries to wait before concluding contracts [with tour operators] until the situation is clear.”

The Saudi government has restricted entry to Riyadh and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina to contain the spread of the coronavirus. In addition, the umra has been suspended in order to restrict overseas arrivals. (MS)
