Covid-19: Indonesians asked to maintain physical distancing during Easter and Ramadan

JAKARTA - Indonesians are expected to avoid gatherings and maintain physical distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) during Easter and Ramadan, said the government’s spokesman for Covid-19 handling Dr Achmad Yurianto.

“We should ensure that we can observe religious rituals adequately while remaining healthy,” said Dr Yurianto in a press conference at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) headquarters in East Jakarta as quoted by Kompas.com, Thursday (2/4).

“Please avoid public gatherings and maintain physical distancing. We believe we all can be heroes by protecting ourselves, our families, religious congregations, and the community.”

As of 12:00 Western Indonesian time on Thursday, 1,790 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Indonesia. 112 patients have recovered, while 170 died.

With a fatality rate of around 10%, Indonesia has the highest Covid-19 rate in Southeast Asia and one of the highest in the world. (MS)
