Three dams in East Java will be operational by the end of the year

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) will complete the construction of three dams in East Java by the end of this year. The three dams are Bendo Dam (Ponorogo) Gongseng Dam (Bojonegoro) and Tukul Dam (Pacitan). At present, the construction progress of each dam has reached 73.26%, 76.92%, and 76.25%, respectively.

Minister of PUPR Basuki Hadimuljono said that the dam will help improve the management of water and irrigation resources, which are important to support sustainable agriculture, while also help to control flood and as a tourist destination. 

Bendo Dam has a capacity of 43.11 million cubic meters (m3) which will be utilized to provide irrigation for 7,800 hectares (ha) of land in Ponorogo and Madiun. It will also provide water for the cities, help control flood and as an energy source for a 1.56 MW hydropower plant.

Gongseng Dam has a capacity of 22.43 million m3 that can provide irrigation for ​​6,191 ha of land, while also provide water, reduce flood and as an energy source for a 0.7 MW power plant. 

Finally, Tukul Dam has a capacity of 8.68 million m3 that can provide irrigation for 600 ha of land, while also provide water and reduce flood. (LK/AR)
