SURABAYA - The City of Surabaya, Sidoarjo Regency, and Gresik Regency are considering lodging requests to impose large-scale social restrictions to the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

“The Regional Secretary is in coordination [with governments of the three regions] and will confirm further,” said East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa at her official residence at Grahadi State Building, Surabaya on Monday (13/4) as quoted by CNN Indonesia.

Currently East Java Regional Secretary Heru Tjahjono is discussing the possibility of such restrictions with Surabaya City Secretary Hendro Gunawan, Sidoarjo Regency Secretary Jusuf Isnajanto, and acting Gresik Regency Secretary Nadlif, including border screenings.

“Some restrictions are already in place in the aforementioned regions,” said Mr Tjahjono.

As of Monday, 475 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in East Java and 41 have died. So far Surabaya has 208 confirmed cases while Sidoarjo has 39 and Gresik has 17. (MS)
