JAKARTA - State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and the Ministry of Agriculture are asked to open new rice fields in Central Kalimantan in order to anticipate a decline in rice production due to the dry season.

According to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, President Jokowi asked SOEs, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the regional government to open new rice fields in Central Kalimantan. In that area, it is estimated that more than 900 thousand hectares of land is available for use as rice fields.

A plan needs to be made so that the new rice fields can be planted with rice, although the yield may be lower than other plants. This is to anticipate the dry season that will hit Indonesia and several other countries.

"Even though BMKG said that there will be no extreme dry weather, we will also monitor whether there will be natural challenges in the second semester, whether it is drought or pests," he said. (LK/AR)
