SURABAYA - The East Java Provincial Government has officially extended large-scale social restrictions in the Greater Surabaya area which comprises the City of Surabaya, Gresik Regency, and Sidoarjo Regency until May 25, 2020.

“We have mutually agreed to extend large-scale social restrictions in Surabaya, Gresik, and Sidoarjo. The extension will start from May 12 to 25, because the first phase of the restrictions is ending on May 11,” said East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa after a meeting with Surabaya City Secretary Hendro Gunawan, Gresik Regent Sambari Halim Radianto, and acting Sidoarjo Regent Nur Ahmad Syaifuddin at the Grahadi State Building, Surabaya on Saturday (9/5) as quoted by CNN Indonesia.

According to Mrs Parawansa, the policy was made on the recommendation of Airlangga University Faculty of Public Health’s Team of Epidemiologists, whose studies found that 70% of coronavirus (COVID-19) patients still have a high infectious rate after 14 days.

As of Sunday (10/5), Surabaya has 708 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 106 recoveries and 84 deaths. In total, 1,502 have tested positive for the virus in East Java with 230 recoveries and 143 deaths. (MS)
