Sarinah McDonald’s fined Rp 10 million for violating COVID-19 restrictions

JAKARTA - The Sarinah branch of McDonald’s has been fined a maximum amount of Rp 10 million by the Jakarta Municipal Government for violating large-scale social restrictions on its last day of operation on Sunday, May 10, 2020.

On its last day of operation, hundreds of people flocked to the fast-food restaurant, the first McDonald’s outlet in Indonesia, despite Jakarta’s policy of large-scale social restrictions to cushion the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Due to the violation, the management of McDonald’s Sarinah has been obliged to pay a maximum administrative fine of Rp 10 million through Bank DKI,” said Jakarta Municipal Police Chief Arifin at the Jakarta City Hall, Thursday (14/5) as quoted by Antara.

The maximum sanction, said Mr Arifin, was imposed because there is evidence that McDonald’s Sarinah allowed people to gather although, according to him, there was no reason for the restaurant chain to not socialise physical distancing rules because such restrictions have been in place since April 10.

“There is evidence that [McDonald’s] invited people to gather because it was announced on their Instagram page. There were also things to lure people such as a cloth for visitors to sign,” said Mr Arifin. (MS)
