JAKARTA - The British Embassy in Indonesia and non-profit organisation Common Room Network Foundation has launched a Rp 3.5 billion project to provide internet access for the Ciptagelar community in Sukabumi, West Java.

The project, said British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste Owen Jenkins, aims to provide internet access for the Ciptagelar community in order to improve digital literacy. In addition, the project also has a short-term goal to provide up-to-date and reliable information about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“We had this project starting with Common Room Network Foundation, so we quickly worked with them to tweak it so we could make sure that vital health messages—delivered through both traditional and digital media—could reach everyone,” Mr Jenkins said at the project’s virtual launch on Monday (18/5).

“We hope that after this is achieved, the project can focus on making sure this community gets the full benefits of the internet.”

Through the project, the Ciptagelar community will gain access to digital and conventional media content with approaches suited to their culture and customs, including through the distribution of e-books written in Sundanese. (MS)
