GoPlay obtains funding to develop local movie platform in Indonesia

09 June 2020 13:33

JAKARTA. GoPlay, Gojek's on-demand video streaming service, has obtained independent funding led by ZWC Partners and Golden Gate Ventures, to develop a local movie platform in Indonesia.

A number of other investors who take part in the funding include Openspace Ventures, Ideosource Entertainment, and Redbadge Pacific. However, the amount of funding obtained by GoPlay is not made public.

Edy Sulistyo, CEO of GoPlay, said that Gojek's track record in Indonesia will be an added value for GoPlay, in supporting local movie creators and developing Indonesia's creative industries. "Content creators need more space to display their work, then the growth of mobile users also increases demand for more local content," Sulistyo explained.

GoPlay's optimism is far different from HOOQ, Singapore's on-demand video streaming platform, which has recently been liquidated. The dissolution of the joint venture between Warnerbros and Singtel was done because the platform had difficulty competing in Indonesia. (KR/AR)
