Government seeks to increase fish export to EU and US

03 July 2020 09:30

JAKARTA - The government has awarded processing feasibility certificates to at least 975 medium-to-large-scale fish processing units to increase fish export to the US and the European Union. Through the certifictes, the government aims to maintain the quality of exported fish products.

Nilanto Prabowo, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries' Director-General of Maritime and Fishery Product Competitiveness said an adequate quality control system is key to break the EU and US markets. "Of 972 fish processing units, 173 export products to the EU and 179 to the US," he said in a press release on Friday (3/7).

According Mr Prabowo, the EU and the US have different quality control and trade systems; the EU uses a government-to-government approach while the US uses a government-to-business one. EU countries mandate registered exporters to receive export approval signs, while exporters to the US must meet the requirements set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). (LK/MS)
