JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry is trying to reduce imports of pharmaceutical raw materials by 35% by 2022 to create independence in the pharmaceutical sector. At present, as many as 90% of 220 pharmaceutical companies in Indonesia only focus on the downstream sector in the production of medicines.

Agus Gumiwang, Minister of Industry, said that the government is trying to reduce the import of raw materials for medicines. "To reduce imports of raw materials, cooperation with relevant ministries and institutions is needed in making regulations and policies to create a good industrial ecosystem," he said, as quoted from a press release published on Sunday (5/7).

With the good industrial ecosystem, he said, the pharmaceutical industry sector will be more independent, competitive and able to fulfil its own raw material needs. On the other hand, a good ecosystem will also attract investment from home and abroad.

He said the government encouraged the pharmaceutical and medical industries to dominate the domestic market. (LK/AR)
