South Sulawesi ‘almost out of strategies’ to fight COVID-19, says Governor

MAKASSAR - The South Sulawesi Provincial Government is almost running out of strategies to battle the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, said Governor Nurdin Abdullah.

This was conveyed by Mr Abdullah as he announced a joint movement to control the pandemic at Karebosi Field, Makassar on Monday (6/7). “Today we declare a joint movement to control the COVID-19 pandemic in Makassar. Hopefully this movement will produce a significant impact in lowering the number of cases,” he said as quoted from CNN Indonesia.

“This is our umpteenth strategy. We are almost running out of strategies while the number of COVID-19 cases keep rising.”

As of Sunday (5/7), South Sulawesi has 3,785 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 1,902 recoveries and 198 deaths. Currently the province is ranked third in terms of the number of confirmed cases behind East Java and Jakarta.

Local governments in South Sulawesi, Mr Abdullah said, have asked that the spread of the coronavirus in Makassar be suppressed because the majority of confirmed cases in their areas originate from clusters in Makassar. As a response, the Makassar City Government will issue a Mayoral Regulation to limit the movement of people entering and leaving the city.

“The regulation will probably be issued this Thursday or Friday and the technical aspects are still being prepared. The Governor’s message is that we must not make it difficult for the people,” said Makassar’s caretaker mayor Rudy Djamaluddin. (MS)
