Indonesia seeks to strengthen trade with Serbia

BEOGRAD - The Indonesian government is committed to strengthening bilateral trade with Serbia, said Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly.

"On behalf of President Joko Widodo, I would like to address how Indonesia greatly appreciates its bilateral relations with Serbia, which has continued to progress positively across various sectors including law, security, economy, health, and education," Mr Laoly said in a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade on Tuesday (7/7).

"Ahead of the 60th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement, Indonesia is committed to strengthening partnership with fellow member countries, particularly Serbia, in the digital economic, MSME, health, youth, and education sectors."

His meeting with Mr Vučić, said Mr Laoly, is a follow-up to a "very positive" meeting between Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Serbian Deputy Justice Minister Radomir Ilić in the previous day, in which both countries agreed to strengthen bilateral relationship and legal partnership.

In the meeting, Mr Vučić said that he hopes Serbia and Indonesia will increase economic collaboration, especially in relation to agriculture, food, energy, construction, information technology, and the chemical industry.

Mr Laoly's visit to Serbia is part of an ongoing discussion related to a mutual legal assistance (MLA) treaty and extradition between both countries, which he said will serve as an important foundation of partnership between both countries.

"I am confident that MLA and extradition treaties will serve as crucial legal enforcement instrument that can effectively fight trans-national organised crimes including corruption, money-laundering, and cyber crime," Mr Laoly explained. (MS)
