JAKARTA - The government plans to replace diesel power plants (PLTD) with biogas power plants in the next three years to reduce carbon emissions. This plan is also related to the plan to increase the content of renewable energy to 23% in the energy mix by 2025.

Arifin Tasrif, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources said that his party was looking for a breakthrough in how to reduce emissions from coal-fired power plants. "One of them is by using biomass co-firing mechanism in coal power plants to reduce emissions and increase the role of renewable energy. We also plan to stop using old coal power plants and implement environmentally friendly coal energy technology," he said as quoted from a press release published yesterday (9/7).

The use of biogas, said Tasrif, is very important in Indonesia's plan to use clean energy because biomass can be processed in the form of waste while also reduce emissions. Indonesia, he continued, will prepare waste to energy (WTE) facilities in 14 cities, to integrate waste management and electricity generation.

He said that biofuel for transportation is being developed to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. (LK/AR)
