JAKARTA. The COVID-19 pandemic cost the tourism industry around Rp 70 trillion.

Chairperson of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Hariyadi Sukamdani explained that since the pandemic began, more than 2,000 hotels and 8,000 restaurants had stopped their operations.

According to him, hotels lost Rp 30 trillion and restaurants lost Rp 40 trillion. In a Public Hearing Meeting (RDPU) with the Working Committee (Panja) for Tourism Recovery of the Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) held today (14/7), he also said that besides hotels and restaurants, airlines also lost US$ 812 million and tour operators lost around Rp 4 trillion.

Hariyadi assessed that the decline in demand in the tourism sector was due to various factors, including large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) and poor handling of COVID-19 in Indonesia. (AM/AR)
