JAKARTA - The government is accelerating efforts to ratify the ILO convention on fishing labour which was passed on 14 June 2007 in Bogor. The move was carried out to protect the rights of Indonesian crewmen (ABK).

As quoted from a press release published on Wednesday (15/7), Nixson Silalahi, Acting Assistant Deputy for Maritime Law and Maritime Affairs, Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, said the government will try to accelerate the ratification of ILO Convention No. 188 of 2007. "In addition to regulating the responsibilities of the owner of fishing vessels, the captain and the crew, countries that ratified the convention also have rights to protect crews and enforce laws for violations of the rights of crewmen, so this convention needs to be immediately ratified, "Silalahi said.

The issue of labour in the fisheries sector at this time, he said, is quite easy to find. Workers in this sector often do not have adequate training, placement, protection, and remuneration.

Silalahi said that currently, only 18 countries had ratified the ILO Conventions, including Angola, Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Congo, Estonia, France, Lithuania, Morocco, Namibia, Norway, Senegal, South Africa, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. (LK/AR)
