JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry is ready to facilitate the Gorontalo Provincial Government to look for potential investors in the processing industry sector in an effort to develop vaname shrimp ponds. Vaname shrimp pond is considered to have considerable potential, in addition to meeting the needs of the domestic market, it also has the opportunity to fill the export market.

"We will encourage increased investment to grow the industry. Therefore, the government is determined to create a conducive business climate by issuing policies that can accelerate the strategic sector,” Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said on Tuesday (7/14).

Based on data from the Gorontalo Province Office of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, out of 16,713 hectares of shrimp ponds spread in Pohuwato, Boalemo and North Gorontalo districts, currently only 54 percent are operating.

Not only that, most of the existing ponds are traditionally managed. In January-September 2018, Gorontalo fishery exports reached 40.2 tons, mostly for vaname shrimp. This type of shrimp is quite popular among Japanese people. (LM)
