Indonesia will resume operations of nine passenger ships

JAKARTA. The Indonesian government has resumed operation of nine passenger ships starting this week, although the number of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia continues to increase, surpassing the total number of cases in China.

O.M. Sodikin, Director of Passenger Transportation Business at PT Pelayaran Nasional (Persero) or Pelni, said that one passenger ship, KM Gunung Dempo, had been operated on Friday (17/7) yesterday. Then six passenger ships will be operated starting this week.

"Two other ships will start operations in the fourth week of July 2020," Sodikin said through an official statement received at idnfinancials.com.

The six passenger ships that will be operated this week are KM Dobonsolo, KM Lambelu, KM Kelud, KM Egon, KM Sinabung, and KM Ciremai. Then the two passenger ships that will be operated at the end of July are KM Binaiya and KM Awu.

Pelni noted that there are currently 14 passenger ships operating in Indonesia. Meanwhile, 13 other passenger ships have not yet been operated.

For information, the total COVID-19 cases in Indonesia up to Sunday (19/7) yesterday had reached 86,521 cases. This is 3.42% higher than the total cases in China which reached 83,660 cases. (KR/AR)
