Indonesia starts the research on ocean current energy in NTT

JAKARTA. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has started its Pre-Feasibility Study (FS) on ocean current energy for the planned power plant in the Pantar strait, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

According to Agung Pribadi, the Head of the Communications Bureau of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the researchers are downloading ocean current velocity data using the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The process will run for 30 days

Pribadi added, the Pantar strait was recorded as having quite potential ocean currents according to data from the P3GL (Research and Development Center for Marine Geology) gathered in 2011. "This strait has a quite fast current velocity, around 2 m / s, so it has the potential to be developed as a power source, "said Pribadi through a press release.

In 2016, P3GL has processed a number of data on the velocity of ocean currents in a number of potential straits. Starting from the strait areas in East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and Bali. At that time, the velocity of the ocean currents at these points ranged from 0.6 to 3.5 meters per second. (KR/AR)
