JAKARTA - PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) plans to build a plant to process coal into dymethil (DME) in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra, said Corporate Secretary Apollonius Andwie C. in a press release on Wednesday (28/10).

According to Mr Andwie, the plant will process as many as 6 million tonnes of coal into 1.4 million tonnes of DME per year, which will then be used as alternative fuel to replace LPG. "DME as alternative fuel can lower LPG import and save the state foreign exchange reserves," he said.

Referring to data from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Mr Andwie added, the state can save up to Rp 8.7 trillion by using DME as alternative fuel. "The construction of this downstreaming project is expected to start in mid-2021 and commence operation in 2025," he asserted.

Previously, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo approved coal downstreaming projects as National Strategic Projects in Presidential Decree No. 18/2020. (LK/MS)
