JAKARTA - 2021 is projected to be a year of economic recovery after the downturn caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, said Deputy Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara.

"We are racing with other countries to create a path to economic recovery without increasing COVID-19 cases and infections. The path to recovery is something we need to pursue and implement," Mr Nazara said in a webinar on Tuesday (17/11).

According to Mr Nazara, since the start of the year the government had predicted pressure on various sectors such as consumption, investment, export, and import. As such, he emphasised that government consumption should serve as an economic cushion that supports Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP).

"Government consumption can provide positive support as a cushion for economic growth, because it helps with overall economic growth," Mr Nazara said.

In the fourth quarter this year, he added, economic recovery will continue with stronger health protocols in line with the government's effort to procure a COVID-19 vaccine. Thus, he asked the public to always adhere to health protocols so that economic recovery can be maintained. (MS)
