Surgical masks are now subject to import duty

27 November 2020 06:24

JAKARTA. In an effort to reduce imports, the government has imposed an import duty of 20% on surgical masks.

The import duty decision also takes into account the domestic supply. Based on data from the Ministry of Industry, 3.52 billion pieces of surgical masks may be produced by December. On the other hand, domestic demand is estimated to reach only 129.84 million pieces. Thus, there is a surplus of 3.39 billion pieces.

Director of International Customs and Inter-Customs Agency of the Ministry of Finance, Syarif Hidayat, said that since 8 October 2020, PMK 149 of 2020 came into effect. "Surgical masks are no longer exempted and are now subject to 20% import duty," Syarif said as quoted from Bisnis on Thursday (26/11).

Previously, surgical masks were included in the list of items that exempted from import duty due to COVID-19 pandemic. (AM/AR)
