3,000 MW of power plants cease operation due to lower consumption

02 December 2020 10:04

JAKARTA. At least 3,000 megawatts (MW) of power plants ceased operation until October 2020 due to lower electricity consumption during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, electricity consumption until October 2020 dropped 2.37% year on year (yoy). The drop, said the ministry's Director of Electricity Development Jisman Hutajulu, caused 3,000 MW of power plants to stop operating.

According to Mr Hutajulu, the pandemic has resulted in decreasing electricity consumption in various parts, such as in Bali whose electricity consumption dropped 21.21% yoy until October 2020, while in Java and Bali there was a 10% average drop which resulted in an oversupply. "We shut down around 3,000 MW," he said at a webinar on Tuesday (1/12).

Other regions that experienced negative electricity consumption growth are West Sumatra (-0.53%), West Java (-2.97%), Jakarta and Tangerang (-11.44%), and Banten (-9.73%). (AM/MS)
