Jokowi announces six new ministers in cabinet reshuffle

JAKARTA - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has announced a reshuffle of the Onward Indonesia Cabinet on Tuesday (22/12).

Six ministries were reshuffled, namely the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, the Ministry of Health, Minister of Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fishery, and the Ministry of Trade.

The following list contains the names of new ministers in the Onward Indonesia Cabinet as announced by the President and their respective backgrounds:

  • Minister of Social Affairs: Tri Rismaharini; Mayor of Surabaya from 2010 to 2020. Replacing Juliari Batubara, who has been named as a suspect in the alleged embezzlement of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic social assistance funds.

  • Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy: Sandiaga Uno; vice presidential candidate in the 2019 general election, Deputy Governor of Jakarta from 2017 to 2018, Chair of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs' Association (HIPMI) from 2005 to 2008. Replacing Wishnutama Kusubandio.

  • Minister of Health: Budi Gunadi Sadikin; Deputy Minister of State-owned Enterprises from 2019 to 2020, CEO of PT Inalum (Persero) from 2017 to 2019, CEO of PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk (BMRI) from 2013 to 2016. Replacing Terawan Agus Putranto.

  • Minister of Religious Affairs: Yaqut Cholil Qoumas; Chair of Ansor Youth Movement from 2015 to 2020. Replacing Fachrul Razi.

  • Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fishery: Sakti Wahyu Trenggono; Deputy Minister of Defence from 2019 to 2020. Replacing Edhy Prabowo, who has been named as a suspect in the recent lobster seed export corruption scandal.

  • Minister of Trade: Muhammad Lutfi; Ambassador of Indonesia to the United States from September to December 2020, Ambassador of Indonesia to Japan from 2010-2013, Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (ICB) from 2005 to 2009. Replacing Agus Suparmanto.
