Grab Indonesia to take legal actions against GrabToko

16 January 2021 00:03

JAKARTA - Grab Indonesia plans to take matters against a sketchy e-commerce platform GrabToko into court, in which the latter was embroiled in a fraud case, aside from assuming the "Grab" brand name, as reported by KrASIA. "Grab Indonesia does not know and is not related to the e-commerce platform and social media accounts under the name GrabToko", said Dewi Nuraini, Grab Indonesia spokesperson on Friday (8/1).

GrabToko is an e-commerce platform that sells mobile phones with significant discount, only to its first nine buyers and did not fulfill 980 of the remaining orders. Indonesian police has stated that losses can reach US$ 1.2 million, or IDR 17 billion.

Despite both Grab and GrabToko clarified that they are not related, their similar names created an unpleasant impression that GrabToko is a part of the Grab ecosystem. GrabToko fits the Grab naming pattern, such as GrabFood or GrabRide, hence Grab Indonesia wanted to pursue legal action in order to protect its reputation. “The Grab brand is registered and protected as intellectual property in accordance with the laws and regulations applicable in Indonesia,” Nuraini affirmed.
