02 March 2021 18:13

JAKARTA - The government continues to encourage the development of battery-based electric vehicles (KBL-BB) in Indonesia. This step was taken to meet the trend of the global automotive industry and participate in supporting the global campaign to reduce carbon emissions and save fossil fuels, in addition to growing the national industry.

"Indonesia has great opportunities and potential in the development of electric vehicles. This is supported by the relatively low level of ownership of four-wheeled vehicles, as well as the readiness to form an electric vehicle ecosystem with the preparation of infrastructure that has begun to move," said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta, Tuesday (2/3).

The use of electric vehicles, which is targeted to reach 400 thousand units in 2025, is calculated to reduce carbon emissions by 1.4 million tons while simultaneously saving up to 800 million liters of fuel oil (BBM) or around 5 million barrels, which when converted reaches around USD251 million.

The Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics (ILMATE) of the Ministry of Industry, Taufiek Bawazier said that in order to support the ecosystem in the development of electric vehicles, the Ministry of Industry continues to coordinate intensively with other ministries and institutions. Among other things related to investment, incentives, provision of infrastructure for public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU). This includes setting electricity rates by providing incentives from PLN. (LM)
