The government's foreign debt grew slightly

15 March 2021 11:34

JAKARTA - The government's foreign debt reached USD 210.8 billion in January 2021, or grew slightly by 3.3% compared to December 2020, due to bilateral and multilateral loan payments that were due. This was conveyed by Erwin Haryono, Executive Director, Head of the Communication Department of Bank Indonesia (BI), in a press release quoted on Monday (15/3).

He further explained that apart from the payment due date, the increase in foreign capital flows, in the domestic Government Securities market, also contributed to a slowdown in the government's foreign debt. "Foreign investors’s trust will be maintained with the domestic economy prospect," said Haryono.

However, the position of government securities, in USD and Euro denomination, is still high. Currently, Indonesia's foreign debt is recorded at USD 420.7 billion, consisting of public sector debt (government and central bank) of USD 213.6 billion and private sector of USD 2017.1 billion. (LK/VA)
