JAKARTA. The Minister of Industry, Agus Guwimang Kartasasmita, revealed that the loosening PPnBM-DTP regulations for motor vehicles had allowed cars and motorcycles sales to grow 16.63% and 64.53% in Q1 2021.

According to Kartasasmita, the Sales Tax on Luxury Goods Borne by the government (lit. Pajak Penjualan atas Barang Mewah Ditanggung Pemerintah/PPnBM-DPT) has driven car production by 23.36%, and its sales by 16.63%.

“Looking from quarter to quarter, several of the automotive sector’s indicators went up by double-digit. The car production increased by 23.26%,” Kartasasmita continued in a virtual press conference, Wednesday (5/5).

The positive growth also occurred in the non-oil and gas processing industry. For instance, the chemical, pharmaceutical, and traditional medicine industry grew 11.46%; the furniture industry grew 8.04%; base metal industry 7.71%; rubber, rubber goods, and plastic industry 3.84%; and machine and equipment industry 3.22%.

The Minister also explained that the non-oil and gas processing industry still becomes the main drive behind the national economic growth in Q1 2021, landing on minus 0.74%. According to Kartasasmita, the gross domestic product (GDP) contribution of the said industry reached 17.91%. It was slightly higher than Q1 2020 of 17.86%.

Meanwhile, the food and beverages industry earned 2.45% growth. “It is still inferior due to the low purchasing power of the public. When in fact, the contribution of the said industry to the GDP of the manufacturing industry could reach 30% to 40%,” Kartasasmita concluded. (AM/ZH)
