Pertamina explores CCS technology development to reduce carbon emission

17 May 2021 09:28

JAKARTA – PT Pertamina (Persero) partnered with Exxon Mobil in its attempt to diminish carbon emission by developing Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS). Nike Widyawati, the President Director of Pertamina, relayed the news in a press conference, quoted Monday (17/5).

According to Widyawati, the collaboration between these two parties is related to its zero net emission target to promote global climate goals. The CCS and CCUS technology are applied to several of Pertamina’s oil wells to increase the nation’s oil and gas production.

“The said technology (CCS) is utilised by injecting CO2 to the subsurface layer in the depleted reservoir in Pertamina’s operational field,” Widyawati continued.

Furthermore, Pertamina would use CCUS technology by optimising CO2 as products with additional values, which would then be applied in the upstream and downstream sectors. “President Jokowi requested a business transformation towards the green economy, focusing on the new and renewable energy,” Widyawati stated.
