KPPU awaits GoTo merger report

24 May 2021 07:27

JAKARTA – Indonesia Competition Commission (lit. Komisi Persaingan Usaha/KPPU) is waiting to be notified regarding the merger between Gojek and Tokopedia last week (17/5). GoTo’s establishment is deemed the most extensive collaboration between two of Asia’s most influential digital platform companies.

In a press conference, quoted Monday (24/5), M Afif Hasbullah, a KPPU member, announced that KPPU simultaneously supervises corporates actions that could pose any implications towards Indonesia’s business competition. “GoTo group is expected to provide an explanation to KPPU regarding their merger as the requirements stated,” Hasbullah added.

Based on KPPU’s rules, the companies undergoing acquisition and merger must notify KPPU at least 30 days after the effective date. However, this notification period is extended to 60 days, based on KPPU Regulations No.3/2020, to support the nation’s economic recovery.

According to Hasbullah, KPPU would monitor GoTo regarding the potential monopoly practices within the digital market field. “The digital market transaction is commonly involving multiple parties (multi-sided). Therefore, it calls for a complex analysis of its network impact,” Hasbullah stated. (LK/ZH)
